The 2021/22 State League 1 Gala Weekend continued on Sunday after Saturday's washouts, with eight teams taking the field at Empire Ballpark for a fantastic day of baseball. After the first week, Vic Park Belmont is 2-0 with the Braves sitting at 1-1 and Carine, South Perth, and Swans all at 1-0. There's another big weekend of games ahead with games scheduled at Rockingham, South Perth, Vic Park Belmont, and Swan Districts for this coming Saturday and Sunday. Check out recaps from Sunday's games: South Perth Cubs 2 v Braves 1 The Cubs grabbed the lead in the fourth inning to defeat the Braves 2-1 on Sunday. The game was tied at one with South Perth batting in the bottom of the fourth when Jaxon Limpus drew a walk, scoring one run. The pitching was strong on both sides as South Perth struck out three and gave up just two hits, while Braves pitchers sat down five and allowed six hits. The Cubs opened in the first when Max Wheeler singled on a 1-1 count to bring home a run. The Braves tied things up in the third when Cody Parkinson drew a walk to score a run. Tyler Paull pitched the Cubs to victory, going two and two-thirds innings with zero runs on two hits and no walks. Will Sherriff threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen, recording the last three outs to earn the save. Broadee Binder took the loss for the Braves as the righthander went two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on one hit. Daniel Schmidt started the game for the Braves, and the lefty went three innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out one and walking zero. James Watson started the game for South Perth. Watson allowed zero hits and one run over two and a third innings, striking out three. The Cubs racked up six hits, including two apiece for Adam Barbarich and Wheeler. The team didn't make any errors in the field as Patrick Temby made the most plays with seven. The Braves were good in the field too with no errors. South Perth is 1-0 going into this weekend's games v. Wanneroo and Vic Park Belmont. The Braves are 1-1 and play Morley and Swan Districts next. Vic Park Belmont Reds 6 v Perth 1 The Reds took out a 6-1 lead thanks to nine hits in the game, including three from Matthew Reynolds. Vic Park Belmont got things started in the first when Zac Meloncelli grounded out, scoring one run. Corey Brown was on the mound for the Reds, throwing four innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, and striking out two. Matteo Pizziconi started the game for Perth. The lefty lasted two innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out three and walking one. Darcy Heppleston and Kyle Francis entered the game from the bullpen, throwing one and two-thirds innings and one-third of an inning respectively. Reynolds and Meloncelli had multiple hits for the Reds while Steve Wrigglesworth went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Perth in hits. The Reds didn't make any errors in the field as Jack Smalpage had the most plays with seven. Vic Park Belmont is 2-0 going into games v South Perth and Carine, while Perth looks for win number one v Wembley. Swan Districts 2 v Wembley 0 Swan Districts Swans defeated Wembley Magpies 2-0 on Sunday as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Dillan Clarkson struck out Joshua Houston to finish off the game. The pitching was strong on both sides, with the Swans striking out seven and the Magpies striking out 12. While Chris Crawford singled in the second inning for Wembley, the team collected just three hits total on the day, compared to five for the Swans. Riley Moore got the win for the Swans, covering four innings, allowing two hits, and zero runs while striking out four. Clarkson threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Nick Alexiou took the loss for Wembley. The righty allowed five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out nine. Maddux Stivey, Lewdon Te Mara, Bailey-Jay Cooke, Daniel Johnston, and Brody Clarkson each collected one hit for the Swans. The 1-0 Swans play the Braves and Morley next while Wembley looks for a win against Rockingham or Perth. Rockingham 0 v Carine 2 Rockingham fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 2-0 loss to Carine on Sunday. The Cats took the lead on a sacrifice fly from Chase Mitchell in the first inning. Both sides had strong pitching with the Cats striking out seven and the Rams sitting down 11. Tarrant Reimers earned the win for Carine, covering seven innings, allowing five hits, and zero runs while striking out seven. Brock Molloy took the loss for Rockingham as the hurler allowed five hits and one run over five innings, striking out eight. Rui Harrison, Sean Garrett, Jake Sheppard, Samuel Sheppard, and Thomas Flynn each collected one hit for Rockingham. Meanwhile, Carine totaled seven hits as Josh Davies went 3-for-4 and Cameron Landy had multiple hits too. The winning side didn't make any errors as Davies had eight chances in the field, the most on the team. 1-0 Carine plays Vic Park Belmont and Wanneroo next while Rockingham takes on Gosnells and Wembley.
