Baseball WA is excited to announce the WA Women's and Youth Women's State Teams ahead of nationals in April.
The 2024 Australian Women's Championship kicks off Tuesday 2 April with finals on Monday 8 April at Melbourne Ballpark. The 2024 Australian Youth Women's Championship runs from 3-7 April. "Congratulations to our WA women's representatives, who will undoubtedly make us very proud on the national stage," Baseball WA CEO Lachlan Dale said. "After last year's gold medal success, we can't wait to see what our team can accomplish in 2024, and with a great group of juniors continuing to develop, the future of WA women's baseball is very bright." South Perth Souths 13, UWA Magpies 1 South Perth Souths defeated UWA Magpies 13-1 on Wednesday night at Empire Ballpark thanks in part to nine runs in the fifth inning. South Perth was first on the board when Jai Hewitt hit an RBI single in the opening frame. Bass Cooper singled for UWA Magpies to tie it at one in the bottom of the first. Souths broke up the tie in the top of the third when Cameron Landy doubled, scoring one run. A walk by Hewitt followed to extend the lead to 3-1. South Perth scored nine runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. Oliver McMahon and Daniel Atkinson both drew bases-loaded walks before an error brought home another run. Jake Bowey singled, scoring two runs, and Landy doubled to score two more. Hewitt’s groundout and Caleb Goodwin’s walk scored the last two runs of the inning. Brett Walters earned the win for South Perth. The reliever gave up zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out one and walking none. Henry Kellen took the loss for UWA Magpies, going two innings with two runs allowed on three hits. He walked two with no strikeouts. Kodai Hamaya stepped on the bump first for UWA Magpies. The left-handed pitcher surrendered two hits and one run (zero earned) over one inning, striking out one and walking none. Swan Districts Swans 7, Rockingham Rams 1 The bottom of the lineup helped Swan Districts Swans capture a 7-1 victory over Rockingham Rams on Friday night at Empire Ballpark. Conor Parry, Ashton Hamilton, and Dustin Brown combined for five of the team’s 10 hits in the victory. They scored four runs and drove in one. Swan Districts won thanks in part to four runs in the fourth inning. An error scored two runs and Maverick Hamilton doubled, scoring two more. Rockingham opened the scoring in the first after Jesse Sequeira singled, scoring one run. Michael De Gasperis hit into a fielder’s choice, which helped Swan Districts Swans tie the game at one in the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the second, Swan Districts broke up the tie with Parry’s RBI single. Hamilton had a base hit to extend the lead to 3-1. Dillian Clarkson stepped on the bump first for Swan Districts. The southpaw surrendered six hits and one run over seven innings, striking out one and walking two. Brock Molloy started on the hill for Rockingham. He allowed nine hits and seven runs (two earned) over four innings, striking out two and walking one. Braves 5, Perth 1 Braves bested Perth 5-1 on Sunday at Inglewood Oval. Perth got on board in the first inning after Tucker Smith induced Benjamin Nesbit to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored. In the top of the third inning, Braves went back into the lead after Joel Beches singled and Matt Kennelly doubled, each scoring one run. Smith stepped on the mound first for Braves. He gave up three hits and one run over five innings, striking out eight and walking none. Todd Hatcher threw two innings of zero-run ball for Braves in relief. The reliever surrendered one hit, striking out three and walking none. Brian (Tanner) Jessen-Dalton stepped on the bump first for Perth. They surrendered nine hits and five runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out eight and walking three. Braves tallied 10 hits in the game. Kennelly, Beches, and Liam Collins each collected two hits while Kevin Clark drove the middle of the lineup with 2 RBIs on a 1-for-4 day. Braves didn’t commit a single error in the field as Geoff Kerr had the most chances with 10. Jake White, Jessen-Dalton, Kai Bancesco, and Jalen McGee each collected one hit for Perth. Perth 7, Braves 2 Brady Oliphant collected three hits in three at-bats as Perth defeated Braves 7-2 on Sunday at Inglewood Oval. Oliphant singled in the third, fifth, and sixth innings. Braves scored in the top of the first when James Smibert hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run. Jalen McGee doubled, which helped Perth tie the game at two in the bottom of the fifth. Perth flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on four hits to take a 7-2 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Ronald (Ronnie) Sweeny that drove in two. Matteo Pizziconi earned the win for Perth. The reliever gave up one hit and zero runs over two and one-third innings, striking out one and walking one. Matt Kennelly took the loss for Braves. He went five and one-third innings, giving up five runs on nine hits, striking out two and walking one. Braves have a doubleheader at Swan Districts on Sunday. Wanneroo Giants 3, Carine Cats 1 Both teams were strong on the hill on Sunday, but Wanneroo Giants defeated Carine Cats 3-1. Rob Sorensen started the game for Wanneroo and recorded 12 outs. Wanneroo didn’t take the lead until later in the game. It was tied at one in the top of the sixth when Owen Pilcher homered to center field, scoring two runs. Carine opened the scoring in the first after Josh Davies singled, scoring one run. Jacob Santich singled to help Wanneroo tie the game at one in the top of the fourth. Sorensen stepped on the hill first for Wanneroo, giving up five hits and one run over four innings with five strikeouts and a walk. Carine starter Conor Lourey gave up five hits and three runs over six innings, striking out 10 and walking five. Jacob Myer threw two innings of shutout ball for Wanneroo in relief. He didn’t give up any hits, striking out three and walking one. Pilcher and Santich were a force together in the lineup, each collecting two hits for Wanneroo. He hit a home run to center field in the first inning, scoring three runs, and singled in the second, scoring another. Wanneroo got on board in the top of the first with Armstrong’s home run and an RBI double by Courtney Jones. They added to their early lead in the second with Armstrong’s base hit and a sacrifice fly by Jones. Wanneroo scored five more on three hits in the top of the seventh. An error scored two runs before Jacob Santich smashed a three-run homer. Giants starter Frazer Brice allowed nine hits and six runs over six innings, striking out three and walking one. He gave up four hits and zero runs over six and two-thirds innings with no walks. Reds won thanks in part to four runs in the fourth inning. Joshua Greenham singled, scoring one run, and Curtis Bacon doubled, scoring three runs. Riley Hall led things off on the mound for Gosnells. The starting pitcher gave up five hits and four runs over four and one-third innings, striking out six and walking four. Bacon led Vic Park Belmont with three runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The infielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Bacon and Greenham each collected two hits. Victoria Park Belmont 17, Gosnells Hawks 13 There were runs aplenty on Sunday at Tom Bateman Sporting Complex Reserve as Victoria Park Belmont took down Gosnells Hawks 17-13. Reds collected eight hits and Hawks had 11. The bottom of the lineup was strong for Vic Park Belmont. Ben Warrington, Cody Van Der Graaf, and Scott Combs combined for five of the team’s eight hits in their victory. They scored two runs and drove in six. Reds got on the board in the top of the first after Sean Garratt singled, scoring two runs, Jack Smalpage hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Van Der Graaf singled, scoring one more. David Burgess homered to right field, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second for Gosnells Hawks. Vic Park scored five runs on one hit in the top of the fourth. Smalpage, Joshua Greenham, and Van Der Graaf drew a walk, scoring one run, and Combs singled, scoring two more. Reds scored six runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning. State Champs will be held at Wanneroo Giants Baseball Club from 28 March to 1 April. The next month, our girls will make history as part of the first-ever Australian Little League Girls Championship from 8-12 May. The event is targeted at female baseball players aged 12 & under. "Adding another step in the journey for our female players is an exciting new development for baseball in Australia,” BWA Participation Manager David Hayes said. “By continuing to grow the number of girls in our tee-ball programs, and then providing them with great experience in their junior baseball years, we are increasingly providing opportunities for our female athletes to grow and develop both as players as people." The winners scored first with a bases-loaded walk by Adam England in the opening frame. Jaxon Limpus tripled to tie the game at one in the bottom of the third. UWA Magpies returned to the lead in the top of the fifth when Willson drew a walk, scoring one run, Bradley Tate also brought in a run on a walk while Henry Kellen singled, scoring two runs. UWA Magpies scored five runs on three hits in the top of the ninth inning. Braves got on board in the top of the first after Kevin Clark doubled and Matt Kennelly singled, each scoring a run. Rockingham responded quickly, scoring on singles from Jesse Sequeira and Ashton Crouch, plus a Braves error and fielder’s choice. They added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Jack Rigden doubled and Clark singled, each scoring a run alongside an error. Boston Foot went 3-for-5 as Swans collected 11 hits overall. Clarkson and Foot drove in two runs each while Daniele and Cameron Phelts had multiple hits, too. Swans practiced patience at the plate with eight walks total. Conor Parry, Ozanne, and Phelts led the team with two free passes each. Peter Reyes, Austin Moyle, Ronald (Ronnie) Sweeny, and Kyan Bertolini each collected one hit for Perth. Reyes led Perth with one run batted in as the infielder went 1-for-2 on the day. Perth turned one double play and didn’t make any errors. Benjamin Nesbit had the most chances in the field with 11. Baseball WA is excited to announce host venues for the 2024 Think Again State Championships, with Little League competitions at Wanneroo Giants Baseball Club from 28 March to 1 April, followed by Junior and Senior League at Rockingham Rams Baseball Club from 9 to 13 April.
“We look forward to another awesome year of Think Again State Championships as our baseball community comes together in support of our awesome junior athletes,” BWA Participation Manager David Hayes said. “Thank you to Wanneroo and Rockingham for stepping up to host these tournaments and offer an exciting experience for baseballers across Little, Intermediate, Junior, and Senior League.” Wanneroo Giants’ home base of Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex will host the Little League State Championships, incorporating Division 1, Division 2, Intermediate League, Machine Pitch, and U10 tee-ball. The action gets underway on 28 March, culminating in finals on 1 April. Junior League and Senior League will get underway on 9 April at Hourglass Reserve, home of Rockingham Rams, with winners crowned on 13 April to secure spots at nationals.
