Western Australia took an early lead but Victoria came back to win 12-3 as the 2022 Australian Women’s Baseball Championship got underway on Friday.
Three two-out singles and a wild pitch saw WA go up 2-0 in the first, with hits from Caitlin Eynon, Kelsey Brennan, and Leah Cornish. An error gave WA a 3-0 advantage in the second, but it didn't last long as Victoria scored on two errors and a double in the bottom frame. WA had bases loaded in the third but the scoring threat was shut down by a fielder's choice and a strikeout. It was a similar story in the fourth as Kaila Borgomastro and Yuki Ishikawa led off with singles before three quick outs followed. From there, Victoria scored six in the fourth and two more across the fifth and sixth while keeping WA off the board. Grace Spano, Emily Watson, Borgomastro, Ishikawa, Eynon, Brennan, and Cornish had one hit apiece for WA. Borgomastro had four hits, two unearned runs, and three strikeouts in three innings on the mound. Georgia Butler, Makayla George, and Ebony Hinchliffe also pitched. WA will look to even things up at 1-1 with a game against Australian Capital Territory at 3:30pm AWST.
