A big week of games saw Wanneroo move back into top spot while the Braves, South Perth and Morley aren't far behind in the 2020/21 State League 1 season. There's still a few action-packed weeks of competition left before the holiday break as teams look to finish the first half of the season off strong. Wembley Magpies 4 v Perth Baseball Club 2 Perth watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 4-2 loss to Wembley on Wednesday night. The Magpies took the lead on a triple in the first inning and never looked back. In the first inning, Wembley got their offense started as Riley Spring drove in one when Spring tripled. Nick Alexiou was the winning pitcher for Wembley, allowing seven hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out 13. Guillaume Duguay took the loss for Perth after giving up seven hits and four runs over seven innings with ten strikeouts. Perth scattered seven hits in the game, including two apiece from Matt Sibley and Jared Pirone. Spring led Wembley with a 4-for-4 day. After this result Perth has a 4-6 record with their next games against the Swans and Braves. Braves Baseball Club 1 v Wanneroo Giants 2 The Braves fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 2-1 loss to Wanneroo on Sunday afternoon. The Giants scored on an error and a double by Courtney Jones in the first inning. The pitching was strong on both sides as Wanneroo pitchers struck out six and the Braves sat down seven. Wanneroo got things started in the first inning when an error scored one run. Jay Bullingham backed things up on the mound, earning the victory after throwing seven innings with three hits and one run allowed along with six strikeouts and no walks. Todd Hatcher took the loss for the Braves, surrendering two runs on two hits over six innings, striking out seven. Sean Garratt, Cody Parkinson, and Jordan Dyer each managed one hit to lead the Braves. There were just three hits for the Braves and two for the Giants, while Wanneroo made one error and the Braves had two. Braves Baseball Club 4 v Wanneroo Giants 6 The Braves made a valiant effort to come back from down five runs in the third inning but they came up just short, falling 6-4 to Wanneroo Giants on Sunday night. Ben Drew, Tim Kennelly, and Kevin Clark picked up RBIs to lead the four-run rally. The Braves fell behind early in the loss when Wanneroo scored on a single by Ben King and an error in the first inning. The Giants scored three more runs in the third inning, led by Ethan Cooper's single and a groundout by Daniel Stephenson. Tom Bailey led the Giants to victory on the pitcher's mound. The righthander allowed three hits and two runs over six innings, striking out eight. Chris King and Madison Beaird entered the game out of the bullpen and helped close it out in relief. Beaird recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Wanneroo. Daniel Schmidt took the loss for the Braves as the lefty went five and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out two. Kennelly led the Braves with half of the team's hits, going 2-for-3. The Giants tallied ten hits on the day with King and Nicholas Riley having multiple hit days. King went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the side. Wanneroo didn't commit a single error in the field. Courtney Jones had the most chances in the field with ten. Wanneroo is 9-2 now and plays Gosnells on the weekend while the Braves slipped slightly to a 6-2-2 record with a Sunday game v Perth up next. Gosnells Hawks 5 v Swan Districts Swans 4 A walk-off home run propelled Gosnells to a decisive, dramatic victory over Swan District Swans with a final score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Louis Scaramella homered on a 1-0 count, scoring three runs. The Swans scored three runs in the fourth inning, but the Hawks still managed to pull out the victory. The winning offensive firepower was led by Maddux Stivey and Dylan Bojarski, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. The Swans got their offense started in the second when Brody Clarkson singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Kane Silvi pitched the Hawks to victory. The righthander surrendered four runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one. Dillian Clarkson took the loss for the Swans after surrendering five runs on nine hits over six and a third innings, striking out two. Scaramella had a long ball in the seventh inning for the Hawks as the team racked up nine hits in total. Jamie White and Luke Houston collected two hits while the Hawks were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Robin Adamson had the most chances in the field with 12. The Swans scattered seven hits in the game. Daniel Johnston and Clarkson each racked up multiple hits as the Swans made no errors in the field and Mitch Schofield took the most chances with five. Gosnells Hawks 3 v Swan Districts Swans 2 The Hawks seized victory in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off single at the end of the game to topple the Swan District Swans. The game was tied at two with Gosnells batting in the bottom of the tenth when Robin Adamson singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. The pitching was strong on both sides. The Hawks struck out nine while Riley Moore sat down seven. Gosnells got on the board in the first inning when Louis Scaramella singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. The Swans knotted the game up at two in the top of the ninth inning. Kirk Peacock grounded out, scoring one run. Adam Millson was the winning pitcher for the Hawks. The righthander surrendered two runs on one hit over three innings, striking out three and walking zero. Moore took the loss for the Swans, allowing seven hits and two runs over nine innings, striking out seven. Joshua Silvi started the game for the Hawks and kept things scoreless over seven innings, striking out six. Gosnells launched one home run and seven hits on the day. Scaramella had a long ball in the sixth inning as he went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team. Maddux Stivey led the Swans with two hits in three at bats. This result helped Gosnells to a 4-4-2 record ahead of two games this next Sunday v Wanneroo. The Swans are 6-4 and play Perth this Wednesday. Morley Eagles 2 v Victoria Park Belmont Reds 1 Morley snatched the lead late in the game in a 2-1 victory over Victoria Park Belmont on Sunday night. The game was tied at one with Morley batting in the bottom of the sixth when Kieran Chapman singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. The pitching was strong on both sides. Morley pitchers struck out nine, while Victoria Park Belmont pitchers sat down seven. In the top of the fifth inning, the Reds tied things up at one when Lachy Southee induced Chris Dawson to hit into a fielder's choice with one run scoring. Morley pulled away for good with one run in the sixth inning. Brendan Sing was the winning pitcher for Morley, giving up no runs on no hits over four innings. Riley Marsh took the loss for Victoria Park Belmont Reds, allowing two hits and one run over two innings, striking out one and walking zero. Corey Brown started the game for the Reds. The pitcher lasted five innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out four and walking one. Southee started the game for Morley, throwing five innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out nine. Ulrich Bojarski went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Eagles in hits. The Reds didn't commit a single error in the field. Matthew Martin had the most chances in the field with nine. The Reds have a 4-5 record and play Carine on Friday and Sunday while Morley is 6-2 ahead of a doubleheader v South Perth. Rockingham Rams 8 South Perth Cubs 9 Despite a 6-run deficit in the fifth inning, Rockingham almost came all the way back, eventually falling 9-8 to South Perth on Sunday night. Rockingham scored four runs in the failed comeback on a error during Corbin Todd's at bat, a fielder's choice by Thomas Flynn, a single by Stuart Sara, and a single by Chase Diggins. Despite the loss, the Rams did collect 11 hits in the high-scoring affair, although the Cubs had 14 hits on the way to victory. Rockingham opened up scoring in the second inning when Diggins singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. The Cubs took the lead for good with seven runs in the fourth inning. Bryce Ruksenas doubled on a 0-1 count to score one run and Caleb Goodwin doubled on a 1-0 count to score another. Then Adam Barbarich was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, followed by a sacrifice fly from Max Wheeler to bring around another. Last but certainly not least, Jake Bowey homered on a 1-0 count, scoring three runs. The high-scoring game continued as Rockingham tallied four runs in the fifth inning. Todd, Flynn, Sara, and Diggins powered the big inning with RBIs. Luke Mann was credited with the victory for South Peth, allowing ten hits and seven runs over five innings with two strikeouts. Will Sherriff and Bowey entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close it out. Bowey recorded the last six outs to earn the save for South Perth. Brock Molloy took the loss for Rockingham as he gave up ten hits and nine runs over four innings, striking out four. Rockingham saw the ball well, racking up 11 hits in the game. Cayden Nicoletto, Diggins, David Nichols, and Flynn all had multiple hits. South Perth totaled 14 hits. Goodwin, Kent Fitzgibbons, and Ruksenas all had multiple hits while Goodwin went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Cubs. South Perth improved to 7-2 with a doubleheader against Morley this Sunday as 3-8 Rockingham prepares to play Wembley Wembley Magpies 7 v Carine Cats 1 Wembley Magpies defeated Carine Cats 7-1 on Sunday thanks to a timely four runs in a big fourth inning. The offense was led by Liam Anderson and Nick Alexiou, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Wembley opened up scoring in the second inning with one run coming around on an error. In the top of the third inning, Carine tied things up at one. Jeff Chandler singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Wembley pulled away for good with four runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Anderson doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring three runs and Alexiou singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. Alexiou also led the Magpies to victory on the mound. The righthander surrendered one run on six hits over seven innings, striking out 15 and walking one. Sandon Isle threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Tarrant Reimers took the loss for Carine. The hurler went four and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking one. Wembley collected ten hits. Anderson, Alexiou, Riley Spring, and Adam Van Brakel each managed multiple hits for Wembley. Anderson went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team in hits. Chandler went 3-for-4 to help Carine's offense. Wembley Magpies 10 v Carine Cats 7 The second game of the day for these two sides saw Wembley walk away victorious once again, this time with a score of 10-7 over Carine. The base paths were crowded for both offenses in this high-scoring matchup as Carine got things moving in the first inning when Chase Mitchell's sac fly scored one run. Wembley pulled away for good with four runs in the third inning. Jayson Brown singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run and Liam Anderson doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring three runs. Carine scored three runs in the seventh inning with a home run by Tarrant Reimers. Chris Crawford led the Magpies to victory on the hill, giving up seven runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out four. Jeff Chandler took the loss for Carine. The pitcher surrendered six runs on eight hits over three and a third innings, striking out two and walking zero. Joel Hughes started the game for the Cats, covering two and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out one. Wembley hit two home runs as Nick Alexiou had a homer in the first inning and Anderson went deep in the fifth inning. Wembley racked up 11 hits including two apiece for Brown, Riley Spring, Anderson, and Crawford. Chandler went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Carine in hits. Cameron Landy had three of Carine's six stolen bases. Wembley is now 3-8 going into a matchup with Rockingham and Carine is 1-10 before playing Victoria Park Belmont. Lourey, a pitcher from Wanneroo Giants Baseball Club, was named the Perth Heat’s Pitcher of the Year for the 2018/19 ABL season. His extensive baseball experience will be beneficial to the MP70 Summer Champs players, who may be transitioning from tee-ball or looking for additional game time in the tournament-style event. Last year’s MP70 tournament saw 96 kids participate from across WA, and this year’s program will once again offer excellent coaching under Lourey’s leadership. It will be a big week of machine pitch to prepare players for the MP60 and MP70 State Championships on 12-15 April 2021. Registration is open but spots are limited. Baseball Australia announced today that Adelaide will host the Australian Women’s Championship in 2021 for the first time since the tournament’s inception.
West Beach, in the city’s western suburbs, will hold the event from 2-9 April 2021. The announcement follows Adelaide last week being named host of two games in next year’s historic Women’s Showcase. The tournament, which did not take place this year in Canberra due to COVID-19, will start in its traditional Good Friday timeslot. It will wrap up with the gold medal game on Friday, 9 April. The Women’s Championship will add to a busy schedule at West Beach. Adelaide will be home to an Australian Baseball League hub from 14-20 January, including a Women’s Showcase doubleheader on 17 January, and host the Australian Junior League Championship from 16-20 May. Western Australia won silver and Victoria won gold in the 2019 women’s decider with SA finishing third. The #AWC2021 schedule will be revealed in the new year. The 2020/21 State League 1 season has featured some close results, including a handful this past weekend as teams fought hard for their wins. The Braves are now 6-2-0, keeping them narrowly in front of 6-1 South Perth as Wanneroo, Swan Districts and Morley round out the top five. South Perth Cubs 0 v Victoria Park Belmont Reds 1 Matthew Martin had all the right stuff on Friday for the Reds, allowing zero runs and besting South Perth by a score of 1-0. The pitching was strong on both sides as winning pitcher Martin struck out seven, while Luke Mann sat down four as he took the mound for the Cubs. Martin surrendered zero runs on two hits over seven innings, striking out seven, while Mann went six innings, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Josh Paull went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Reds in hits. A single by Caleb Goodwin in the second inning was positive for South Perth. South Perth made one error while the Reds had none, with Jack Smalpage taking the most chances in the field with eight. With this win, Vic Park evened things up for a 4-4 record. Wanneroo Giants 6 v Rockingham Rams 0 Tom Bailey threw a gem on Sunday for the Giants, allowing zero runs and besting Rockingham by a score of 6-0. Wanneroo got things moving in the second inning with one run scoring on a sac fly from Daniel Bourke. The Giants notched three runs in the third inning with RBIs to Nick Irwin, Courtney Jones and Byron Armstrong. One bright spot for Rockingham was a single by Chase Diggins in the fourth inning. It wasn't long before the Giants evened things up, scoring two in the bottom of the third thanks to a sac fly from Nick Irwin. Wanneroo pulled away for good with two runs in the sixth inning. Jackson Riley took the win, throwing four innings and allowing one run on one hit, striking out four and walking one. Brock Molloy took the loss for the Rams. They got things moving in the second inning, when Daniel Choi singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run. Daniel Schmidt earned the win for the Braves. The lefty surrendered one run on six hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking zero. Cameron Lamb and Alex Oehme entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Raleigh Pelkonen took the loss for Morley. The hurler went five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking zero. The Braves racked up ten hits in the game. Ben Drew and Kevin Clark each racked up multiple hits for Braves SL1. Ben Drew went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team while Clark had two base hits for three RBIs. The Braves didn't commit a single error. Drew made the most plays with 14. Alex Hall led Morley Eagles SL1 with two hits in four at bats. The Braves are 6-0-2 at the top of the ladder while Morley has dropped the last two after a 5-0 start to the season. Morley plays Victoria Park Belmont Reds this weekend and the Braves play Wanneroo. Carine Cats 4 v Perth Baseball Club 16 Carine fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 16-4 loss to Perth on Sunday. Perth took the lead on a home run in the second inning. The Cats struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Perth, giving up 16 runs. Perth opened up scoring in the second inning, when Jake White homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring three runs. Matt Durbin took the win for Perth after throwing seven innings with four runs and five hits allowed along with nine strikeouts. Jacob Stanton took the loss for Carine, allowing six hits and five runs over three innings, walking zero. Nathan Roddy, Bailey Kempton, Tarrant Reimers, Lincoln Kempton and Cody Holt all had hits for Carine. Perth tallied nine hits in the game. Durbin and Brady Oliphant all collected multiple hits, as Durbin went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the way. Carine is now 1-8 and has a double header against Wembley this weekend, while Perth is 4-5 heading into a Wednesday night game v. the Magpies. Gosnells Hawks 3 v South Perth Cubs 4 Sunday's game against South Perth was a heartbreaker for Gosnells as they lost the lead late in a 4-3 defeat. The game was tied at three with South Perth batting in the top of the ninth when Jake Bowey singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. South Perth got things moving in the third inning when Bowey homered on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs. Gosnells knotted the game up at three in the bottom of the eighth inning, including two runs from a Ryan Smith single. Caleb Goodwin led the Cubs to victory on the mound. He allowed one hit and two runs in one inning. Will Sherriff and Bowey entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Swan Districts Swans 3 v Wembley Magpies 2 The Swans took the lead late in the game in a 3-2 victory over Wembley on Sunday. The game was tied at two with Swan Districts batting in the bottom of the seventh when Joris Van Ballegooy induced Tyson Noel to hit into a fielder's choice as one run scored. The pitching was strong on both sides. The Swans struck out three, while Wembley's Van Ballegooy sat down six. Riley Moore got the win for the Swans. He threw seven innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out two. Dillian Clarkson threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen and recorded the last six outs to earn the save. Van Ballegooy took the loss for Wembley. The hurler went eight innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out six. Maddux Stivey went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Swans in hits. Riley Spring doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs in the sixth as a highlight for Wembley.
